This is probably my number one use of the Zune and so I would tend to agree. :)

Best MP3 players for podcasts | MP3 Insider - CNET Reviews
1. Microsoft Zune: A fantastic podcast option, the Zune even ekes past the iPod for the top spot. The software is excellent for podcasts: You can manage how many episodes you want to sync to your device on a subscription-by-subscription level, meaning you can update three episodes of Buzz Out Loud, but only one of MP3 Insider and so on. You can also unsubscribe from podcasts directly from the player, and there's an option to wirelessly sync new podcasts when you charge your player at night. The Zune also offers accelerated fast forwarding and passive bookmarking to automatically to automatically remember your spot in each podcast.

Technorati Tags: Zune,Microsoft,MP3,Podcast

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-26T16:13:50Z</dcterms:modified>

This Week On Channel 9

If you haven't seen it, check out This Week on C9 with Dan Fernandez and Brian Keller.
The WorldWide Telescope was first shown to the public at TED 2008, in a joint presentation by project leader Curtis Wong, manager of Next Media Research for Microsoft, and Roy Gould, a science educator with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. In this interview they discuss how -- and why -- the WorldWide Telescope combines many sources of astronomical data and imagery to create a seamless view of the night sky.

Technorati Tags: telescope,wwt,microsoft,worldwide telescope,udell,wong

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-26T14:24:13Z</dcterms:modified>

Bill Gates: Transitioning into the Future

Interview up on Channel 9.

Bill Gates has been at the helm of Microsoft for the entire existence of Microsoft. It's the only place he's worked and he's getting ready to step down from his day to day responsibilities in his office on the Redmond campus. Bill's employment future will be centered around running his philanthropic enterprise, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill is fundamentally shifting his focus from achieving his dream of "a PC in every home" to helping realize the vision of "healthy people in every country". He talks about how each one of us can help make this dream come true by donation of time, expertise and, of course, money.

The video is below. This was a great event and I learned a lot about how WWT works and how it was put together.

Blogger Back Channel Event: World Wide Telescope

Recorded LIVE
On Tuesday (June 17 2008) a small group of bloggers from across the globe were invited to participate in an online, interactive discussion with Curtis Wong and Jonathan Fay; the gentlemen behind World Wide Telescope.

Along with Ambika Singh from the Microsoft team here in Redmond, we placed Curtis and Jonathan in the Channel 10 studios and streamed them live to the web via Ustream with a web chat system powered by Windows Live Translator where they fielded questions about and provided demos of World Wide Telescope.

We recorded two sessions to accommodate for global time zones. Here is the PM session recording for bloggers from Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific.

Microsoft Origami Experience 2.0 contains these four programs for an ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) running Windows Vista:

Origami Central
Central gives you instant access to all your media, programs, and the Internet, with the touch of a finger.

Origami Now
Now gives you one-touch access to the most important information at any given time and place.

Origami Picture Password
With a Picture Password, you can log on to Windows and unlock your computer by tapping a sequence of targets on a picture, instead of typing a password.

Touch Settings
Touch Settings combines several settings in Windows Vista into one place to make it easier to customize a touch screen.

You can check it out here:

Writer DevZone: Technical Preview: Now Available for Download
The biggest changes are the additions of two new plugin types: publish notification hooks and header/footer content sources. Publish notification hook plugins allow you to execute code before and after Writer posts content to a weblog. They can examine the contents of the post and have the option to cancel the publish operation. Header/footer source plugins insert headers or footers during publishing. Headers and footers are not directly editable by Writer users and do not appear in Writer’s editing views, but are visible in the Preview view (and of course, on the published blog post).

It includes a Twitter sample, which I haven't tried out yet.
Technorati Tags: writer,sdk,windows live,microsoft,twitter

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-06-05T18:18:16Z</dcterms:modified>

Media Center University: Optimizing for Entertainment & Networking – Part 1

We shot some talks by professional consumer electronics installers at the Electronic House Expo (EHX) this spring and they're now becoming available on the CE Installer Blog. These work great if you're showing code, or doing any sort of presentation really.

Tips from My Technical Presentations

My role involves spending a good deal of time with technical audiences. Recently, I've been getting reactions like this - "I enjoyed your presentation! I have an odd question - how did you zoom in like that?" or "How did you set those colors in Visual Studio?"

So, I'm posting some tips so I can direct people here for more information.

I hadn't heard of a tool called ZoomIt, but man, it's one of the coolest little presenting tools I've ever seen. You have to try it to believe it. I'm going run it all the time, just to help people see what I want to show them on my screen.

If you're interested, I posted some links to presentation resources on the MacMojo blog a couple of year ago.

There's a page that describes how it works here. Seems pretty straightforward. You can sign up by just logging into it with your Passport account. I'm finding some pretty good deals through this, whether I use the cashback thing or not.
Here's the definition from the FAQ.

What is Live Search cashback?

Microsoft Live Search cashback is "The Search That Pays You Back". Find great deals on millions of products from hundreds of brand name stores that you know and trust. You will be able to earn cashback savings based on a percentage of the product price. Your savings will be paid to you via your choice of a deposit to your PayPal account, direct deposit to your bank account, or a check in the mail. It's that simple!

Technorati Tags: cashback,shopping,microsoft,live

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-23T14:55:05Z</dcterms:modified>

Disney World - Photos and Live Updates

This is pretty cool. If you haven't installed it yet, check out the video and then get to it. :)

WorldWide Telescope - video demo and information

Early this morning I downloaded the new WorldWide Telescope application from Microsoft Research. After exploring the galaxies, I decided this would be a cool screencast to demo the application for those of you that might not otherwise download, install and begin exploring. Your children are going to love this. Heck, you might have some fun, too!!!

Technorati Tags: wwt,microsoft,telescope,space,video

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-05-16T22:05:23Z</dcterms:modified>

Robert Rauschenberg, art's eclectic master, dies at 82 - The Boston Globe

My very favorite artist has died. I'm not sad, as he obviously lived a very long and productive life. I was an art student in college when I was first introduced to his work. At one point I think I had an opportunity to purchase an original print for about $600, but of course I didn't have that kind of cash. I think it would have made a good investment, but I probably would have never sold it anyway. :)

I recently took a picture of his plaque at the Florida State Capitol.

There's a nice write-up at the Boston Globe:

Robert Rauschenberg, art's eclectic master, dies at 82 - The Boston Globe

The art critic Robert Hughes once described Mr. Rauschenberg as "a protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art." Hughes added that Mr. Rauschenberg's "taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a bigness of soul and a richness of temperament that re called Walt Whitman."

In his art, Mr. Rauschenberg scorned both pretense and category. "I work in the gap between art and life," he liked to say, and many of his best-known works might seem as suited to thrift shop as art museum.

Among Mr. Rauschenberg's most celebrated creations were his "combines," three-dimensional assemblages that incorporate painting, sculpture, and found objects: a frozen choreography of the mundane and the inspired. "Monogram" (1959), perhaps his most famous work, includes a stuffed goat, a tire, a police barrier, a shoe heel, a tennis ball, and paint.

Macros can be as simple as inserting your mailing address to as complex as providing a completely different speech interaction utilizing a number of built in capabilities or utilizing custom JScript/VBScript actions.

Technorati Tags: speech,vista,macros,utilities,microsoft

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2008-04-29T14:30:21Z</dcterms:modified>

Microsoft picked for Democratic convention

I thought this was sort of cool...

Microsoft picked for Democratic convention
Software giant Microsoft Corp. will be the official software and HD web content provider for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) made the announcement Monday. Check it out.

Geotagging Photos with Windows Live (without using a GPS device)

Geotagging, for many people, implies going on trips with a camera and a GPS receiver, and then using some custom software to tag all the photos with the GPS data after the trip. Being one who loves geotagging, I have a confession, though: I have never owned a GPS device.

So, how can I geotag photos and share them with family and friends? I can explore the world virtually through many different mapping applications that combine both maps and photos. Some of these allow geotagging (a la Flickr, et al), but that records only individual photo’s locations, not a full tour. What I’ve found out is a way to play around with the Live Maps Collections feature to create a photo tour. So, for those who want to create simple photo tours to share with friends and the world (and don’t want to deal with GPS), here’s how.
