On Tuesday (June 17 2008) a small group of bloggers from across the globe were invited to participate in an online, interactive discussion with Curtis Wong and Jonathan Fay; the gentlemen behind World Wide Telescope.
Along with Ambika Singh from the Microsoft team here in Redmond, we placed Curtis and Jonathan in the Channel 10 studios and streamed them live to the web via Ustream with a web chat system powered by Windows Live Translator where they fielded questions about and provided demos of World Wide Telescope.
We recorded two sessions to accommodate for global time zones. Here is the PM session recording for bloggers from Eastern Europe and Asia Pacific.

Writer SDK Technical Preview

The Windows Live Writer team released an update to the SDK earlier this week. You can check it out here:

Writer DevZone: Technical Preview: Now Available for Download
The biggest changes are the additions of two new plugin types: publish notification hooks and header/footer content sources. Publish notification hook plugins allow you to execute code before and after Writer posts content to a weblog. They can examine the contents of the post and have the option to cancel the publish operation. Header/footer source plugins insert headers or footers during publishing. Headers and footers are not directly editable by Writer users and do not appear in Writer’s editing views, but are visible in the Preview view (and of course, on the published blog post).

It includes a Twitter sample, which I haven't tried out yet.

Tips from My Technical Presentations

My role involves spending a good deal of time with technical audiences. Recently, I've been getting reactions like this - "I enjoyed your presentation! I have an odd question - how did you zoom in like that?" or "How did you set those colors in Visual Studio?"
So, I'm posting some tips so I can direct people here for more information.

I hadn't heard of a tool called ZoomIt, but man, it's one of the coolest little presenting tools I've ever seen. You have to try it to believe it. I'm going run it all the time, just to help people see what I want to show them on my screen.

I've been playing with Live Search cashback this morning. There's a page that describes how it works here. Seems pretty straightforward. You can sign up by just logging into it with your Passport account. I'm finding some pretty good deals through this, whether I use the cashback thing or not.

Here's the definition from the FAQ.

Robert Rauschenberg, art's eclectic master, dies at 82 - The Boston Globe

My very favorite artist has died. I'm not sad, as he obviously lived a very long and productive life. I was an art student in college when I was first introduced to his work. At one point I think I had an opportunity to purchase an original print for about $600, but of course I didn't have that kind of cash. I think it would have made a good investment, but I probably would have never sold it anyway. :)

I recently took a picture of his plaque at the Florida State Capitol.

The art critic Robert Hughes once described Mr. Rauschenberg as "a protean genius who showed America that all of life could be open to art." Hughes added that Mr. Rauschenberg's "taste was always facile, omnivorous, and hit-or-miss, yet he had a bigness of soul and a richness of temperament that re called Walt Whitman."
In his art, Mr. Rauschenberg scorned both pretense and category. "I work in the gap between art and life," he liked to say, and many of his best-known works might seem as suited to thrift shop as art museum.
Among Mr. Rauschenberg's most celebrated creations were his "combines," three-dimensional assemblages that incorporate painting, sculpture, and found objects: a frozen choreography of the mundane and the inspired. "Monogram" (1959), perhaps his most famous work, includes a stuffed goat, a tire, a police barrier, a shoe heel, a tennis ball, and paint.

The tale, a humorous cross between “The Matrix” and “The Office” (or “Office Space”) begins with a six-minute clip that can be watched on the relay Web site. The clip is directed by Kyle Newman, the director of “Fanboys,” a coming movie about “Star Wars” aficionados.

Software giant Microsoft Corp. will be the official software and HD web content provider for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
The Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) made the announcement Monday. The convention will be held Aug. 25-28 in Denver.
"Microsoft's standing as an industry leader in software development makes them an ideal partner for the DNCC," said Leah Daughtry, CEO of the DNCC.

Geotagging, for many people, implies going on trips with a camera and a GPS receiver, and then using some custom software to tag all the photos with the GPS data after the trip. Being one who loves geotagging, I have a confession, though: I have never owned a GPS device.
So, how can I geotag photos and share them with family and friends? I can explore the world virtually through many different mapping applications that combine both maps and photos. Some of these allow geotagging (a la Flickr, et al), but that records only individual photo’s locations, not a full tour. What I’ve found out is a way to play around with the Live Maps Collections feature to create a photo tour. So, for those who want to create simple photo tours to share with friends and the world (and don’t want to deal with GPS), here’s how.

A couple of weeks ago my domain expired, so you may have stopped getting updates from this blog. Hopefully it's all fixed now. (Paid the bill, the lights are back on.)

Funny thing is, I noticed this becasue my traffic dropped dramatically and I couldn't figure out why. I guess that's what's cool about RSS readers; they just keep asking for the data and they let you know when something new comes back online.

Check it out. From your Start menu, click All Programs, then Windows Update. From the Windows Update screen click Check for Updates. One machine down four more to go. :)
